What they Say! – ISAAC ‘TONY’ PITTERSON JNR
When did your start your career as a groom?
My career as a groom began in 1989 but I was involved in racing from a tender age as while I was attending the Gregory Park All Age school, I would go to track in the mornings before school and I would return when I left. At first, I wanted to be a jockey but my mother (Dorothy Jones) and father (Isaac Pitterson (Sr)) said no but that didn’t stop me as I had a special love for the sport. I decided to stay around the game for a while and as faith would have it, I then became a groom, and a very proud one.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner was Still Harmony, ridden by Dennis Brown going over 1,200 metres. When I won the race it was like I was in paradise. I was happy, excited and anxious at the same time. Still Harmony won by all of 10 lengths beating the Billy Williams-trained Final Spleen and Stella Attraction trained by Phillip Feanny. To beat those two trainers in one race by 10 lengths, it was a day that I won’t forget as it was a great achievement. I was at Ivan Williams’ stables at the time.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
The Owen Sharpe-trained Castana was my longest odds winner. Castana won and paid over $500. That was around 1998 0r 1999. I knew that the horse had a chance to win, it was about $10 for a bet at the time. It was a good win for me.
Which is the best horse that you have groomed?
The best horse that I have groomed was Billy Debonair Native. He raced four times and won three times. He was on his way to the Classics but got injured and had to be taken out of racing. If he didn’t get injured, he would have been a great racehorse as he had potential. But the most accomplished horse I had was Restless Taj as I won seven races with him.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
I would say Prince Consort. He won two Superstakes which is a great accomplishment. Prince Consort won his races impressively while carrying top weight. Many persons would say that The Viceroy is the best but I don’t think that The Viceroy was better than Prince Consort.
Who influenced your career the most?
Mainly my family and I thank them. I am current working with Steven Todd and everything is going well. He has been a wonderful boss and I thank him for his guidance and support.
