16-y-o stops clock in boys’ 100-m breaststroke
Sixteen-year-old Kevaughn Campbell stopped the clock in record time to win the boys’ 100-metre breaststroke and starred in the morning session on day two of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) Christmas Open Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre yesterday.
Campbell, who entered the event with a seeded time of 1:12.65 minutes, erased the three-year-old record of 1:13.17 minutes set by Antoine Young in 2011. The Swimaz Aquatics Club representative stopped the clock at 1:12.04 minutes, which is also a new personal best.
Second-placed Sean-Douglas Gooden (1:12.76) of Tornadoes, also went below the record, with Bryce Butler (1:13.27) of Swimaz Aquatics in third. Ivana Chang, who also represents Swimaz Aquatics, won the girls’ equivalent in 1:24.68 minutes, ahead of Annastazia Chin (1:25.56) of Tornadoes, and Gabrielle Hopkins (1:28.37) of Blue Seal.
Naomi Eaton of Wahoo Swim club won the girls’ 10-12 equivalent with a time of 1:27.94 minutes, ahead of Paris Clare (1:34.47) of Speedos and Thandiwe McDonald (1:34.88) of Swimaz Aquatics. Cameron Brown of Speedos won the boys’ age-group category in 1:24.55 minutes, followed by Adrian Grant (1:28.79) of Blue Seal, and Akeem Alleyne (1:29.00) of Swimaz Aquatics.
Campbell returned shortly after to win the boys’ 50-metre butterfly in a fast time of 27.47 seconds, ahead of Orane Garrick (28.35s) of Marlin, and Jesse Marsh (28.61s) of Tornadoes. Meanwhile, Chang took the girls’ equivalent in 31.56 seconds. Angara Sinclair of Speedos was second in 31.64 seconds, while Chin finished third in 32.44 seconds.
Eaton again took the girls’ 10-12 equivalent in 35.14 seconds, ahead of Dissandra Daley (35.83s) of Swimaz Aquatics, and Michae Bradshaw (36.56s) of Speedos. Jordane Payne of Swimaz Aquatics topped the boys age-group category with 31.44 seconds, ahead of Joel Wilkinson (32.39s) of Marlins, and Brown (33.71s).
Payne then outswam his competitors in the 100-metre freestyle to win in 1:02.99 minutes, ahead of Grant (1:06.97) and Jonathan Lyn (1:07.22) of Tornadoes. Britney Williams of Swimaz Aquatics won the girls’ age-group category, ahead of Karci Robinson (1:08.12) of Marlins, and Eaton (1:08.76).
Angara Sinclair of Speedos won the girls open equivalent in 1:03.23 minutes, just ahead of Chang (1:03.62) and Chin (1:03.68). Jesse Marsh won the boys category in 57.71 seconds, followed by the Swimaz Aquatics pair of Jordan Hines (57.93s), and Campbell (58.80s).
Marsh also took the top spot in the 200-metre backstroke event in 2:40.08. Kymon Naar (2:41.34) of Swimaz Aquatics was second, with Nicholas Haughton (2:41.93) of Marlins taking third. Sinclair was just as fluent in the girls’ section, winning in 2:39.39 minutes, ahead of Chin (2:48.74) and Katherine Brown (3:08.29) of Speedos.
Swimaz Aquatics currently head the standings with 297 points, followed by Tornadoes (259) and Y-Speedos (220). Marlins (180), Blue Seal (86) and Wahoo (37) round off the six-team table.
The three-day carnival will conclude today.
