Historic double
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison Technical won a historic double by claiming the Under-16 and Under-19 sections of the ISSA Western Conference boys’ basketball competitions, beating Cornwall College and Muschett high, respectively, 2-0 in their best-of-three finals at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Thursday.
Herbert Morrison is the third school to achieve the feat, joining Muschett High who did it three times and Cornwall College.
After winning the first games last week, Herbert Morrison easily dispatched Cornwall College 52-33 to complete a perfect season in the Under-16 then held off a determined Muschett High 57-53 in the Under-19 section.
After coming from a double-digit deficit in the first game, it was Muschett who set the pace on Thursday and led by 10 points early in the third quarter.
Herbert Morrison slowly chipped away at the deficit, lowering it to five points with five minutes to go, then to three points with two minutes 37 seconds to go before taking the lead with 40 seconds left in the period.
Muschett managed to retake the lead, but Herbert Morrison’s Alwayne Beadle was fouled attempting a three-point shot as the clock ran out, but made just one of the three free throws as the teams ended the third quarter tied at 39-39.
Herbert Morrison then scored the first seven points in the fourth quarter with Collin Smith scoring the first five points, but once against the resilient Muschett rallied and retook the lead (48-47) with just over four minutes remaining in the game.
Obrien Clarke extended Muschett’s lead to three with a lay-up with two minutes 35 seconds to go, but then Kuwayne Waite scored back-to-back three-point shots that gave Herbert Morrison the lead for good.
Muschett clawed their way back to within a point at 54-53 after Damaine Thorpe made one of three free throws, but Herbert Morrison scored the next three points as time ran out to secure the victory.
Gregory Wallace led Herbert Morrison with 16 points and had 15 rebounds, Waite, who had three three-point baskets in the game, ended with 15 points, while Ralique Grant scored 11 points.
Lamon Thompson scored 12 points and had 15 rebounds for Muschett, Djair Bulgin scored eight points while Obrien Clarke scored five points but had 13 rebounds.
In the Under-16 game, Brendan Dawkins had a triple-double 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals as Herbert Morrison eased to the victory.
Abdul Adekoya also scored 10 points and 11 rebounds before he fouled out.
Nicholas Gilchrist scored 10 points and had 16 rebounds for Cornwall College, while Giovanny Bailey scored eight points and had 12 rebounds.
