Teens in murder case remanded; matter transferred to children’s court
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — The two 16-year-old boys charged with the New Year’s Eve murder of 79-year-old retired nurse Hyacinth Hayden at her Green Park home in this parish were remanded in custody when they appeared in the Falmouth RM Court yesterday.
Meanwhile, the matter has been transferred to the Trelawny Children’s Court in Clark’s Town in the parish by Resident Magistrate Stanley Clarke, who indicated that the case files were not completed. The new mention date is set for January 23.
Meanwhile, the prosecutor expressed safety concerns for the two boys, if they were to be granted bail. RM Clarke warned that the two boys should not be placed among adults, but at a place of safety.
The two accused, who are of Green Park and Bounty Hall addresses — both in Trelawny — stood in court with blank looks on their faces.
Hayden’s bloodied body was discovered by her husband, Ashley, minutes after 3:00 pm last Wednesday on their kitchen step with multiple stab wounds. Ashley had just returned from a corner shop where he had gone 15 minutes earlier to purchase a phone card and other items for his wife.
The house was ransacked and blood was spattered all over the floor, which suggested that the killers might have been searching for money and other valuables.
The death of the senior citizen pushed to 22 the number of murders recorded in the Trelawny Police Division in 2014 and was the 1,005th and final killing recorded by the police for the year.
Yesterday, scores of curious onlookers gathered in front of the court to get a glimpse of the boys as they left the courthouse.
