‘The next half gave it up already’
JAMAICA Observer online readers have reacted to a University of the West Indies Study, which has found that nearly half of Jamaica’s 14 to 25-year-olds would give up their citizenship for opportunities in other countries. Here are some edited comments:

Is this surprising? Not at all.

Add me to the list. Lol!

And the other half does not have any ambition.

The next half gave it up already.

Keep the PNP another five years and this will move to 75%. Wonderful performance by the PNP Government.

I’m sure that closer to 90% of Jamaicans would give up their Jamaican citizenship right away, including myself.

Young people, you all need to tell that to your beloved parents who are diehard comrades and making these choices that got us here, not that the JLP didn’t contribute as well, but in years of life the PNP spent more time as government.

Not just the youths, people have lost all hope and faith in this leadership that always seems to win landslide elections. However, why are you running when you are the reason we are in the predicament? You voted for this.

If those who created the current situation choose to send their offspring overseas for better lives, why should the rest choose to stay?

No surprises there.

No surprise here, there is no hope… can’t blame the younger generation for wanting a better life than that of their parents.

This is no surprise at all. The study was not even necessary. But I guess they needed to get an exact percentage.

Jamaica land we love… not anymore. I wonder why.

And why do we need a study to tell us this?

Well, a young Jamaican politician did the same not too long ago… So what do we expect from the young people who may not have the privileges of the elected few?

The only surprise I have is that I thought it would be more like
60-70 per cent.

What an indictment of politicians and educators. It is also the reason why Jamaica will not be going anywhere in a hurry. No commitment on the part of citizens who are needed to build the nation. Sad, sad, sad!!

What are the real BENEFITS of being a Jamaican citizen? Jamaica has to be the only country where foreigners living in the country have more privileges than its actual citizens. So, other than patriotism, I don’t see any real benefit to being a citizen of Jamaica.

we often assume that the grass is greener on the other side as it relates to all aspects of life. However, this is far from the truth. Getting better financial opportunities is crucial; however, not having a sense of belonging in a foreign land is another matter.

I’m confident it’s 99 per cent, the other 1 per cent being insane.

Lazy-ass young people, they all want to drive BMW and Benz without earning through hard work.
