What they Say! – Carlton ‘Mr Cal’ Watson Racehorse owner
When did you start your career as an owner?
I became an owner in 2010, but I was involved in the sport before as my older brothers were in the sport and they encouraged me to be a part of it as well. I have always had an interest in the sport of horse racing, and so becoming an owner was never in doubt.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner came in 2012 with Real Vibes Machine, trained by Wayne DaCosta and ridden by Dane Nelson who won over 1,200 metres.
I was so happy and excited when I won my first race. The feeling was magical, as goose bumps took over my body. I always had a dream about winning my first race and when it came I was very happy. It is a day that I won’t forget. It was special.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
Double The Honey at 32-1, ridden by Harriston Lewis for trainer Wayne DaCosta over 1,300 metres on 2013 Derby Day. Not being a gambler, the feeling was just like winning any other race. But going off at such long odds I was not all that confident in his chances compared to other horses going off at 1-9, 1-4, 1-2 or 1-5 where you are confident of winning, but every race I want to win it. I have won over 70 races in three years, which is a great accomplishment for any owner.
Which is the best horse you have owned?
It has to be Sweet Trail. Sweet Trail was the only ‘A’ Class horse thus far that I have owned. She won the 2013 Harry Jackson Memorial Cup beating the improved Commanding Chief, which I thought was a very impressive performance. She won many Graded Stakes races. She was a great racehorse. Sweet Trail could sprint as well as she could go long. She did everything that was asked of her. She was a special racehorse to me.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
Based on statistics and performances, I would have to say that The Viceroy is the best. The Viceroy won the Triple Crown, more than one Superstakes and he did them in commanding fashion. The Viceroy, while carrying top weight, would still dismantle any field going over all distances. He was a versatile racehorse as well as a champion. He proved on many occasions that he was a very good horse.
Who influenced your career the most?
My trainers, friends, family…everyone has been good to me and I thank them for it.
