Kipling Weekend for St Catherine Cup
The St Catherine Cup will highlight today’s nine-race card at Caymanas Park.
The two-day festival of racing began yesterday with an 11-race meet headlined by the Mercury Sprint, while the St Catherine Cup will go 1,100 metres for the experienced horses in the Open Allowance category, three-year-olds and upward.
As it was in yesterday’s feature race where the stables of trainer Richard Azan had a strong hand, so it is in today’s St Catherine Cup feature where morning line favourite Border Line and the 5-1 chance Piscean Rocket will compete.
With Omar Walker, the four-time champion jockey riding Border Line, and the current three-time champion jockey Dane Nelson partnering Piscean Rocket, it is an indication that either could win the call.
But the race is jam-packed with talented runners, which means that the race could go to any of the seven runners down to go postward at approximately 4:40 pm, with first post at 12:45 pm.
Apart from the two entries from the barn of Azan, the two 14-time champion trainers Philip Feanny and Wayne DaCosta have also fielded solid entries in Kipling Weekend and Campesino by Feanny, and Fortuneonehundred and Rio Cobre from the DaCosta barn.
Step It Up, who progressed from $180,000 claiming to Open Allowance company with his run of seven wins from his last eight races, which is nothing less than phenomenal, is the odd man out in the field of seven, and is here probably for nothing more than a likely minor share.
While the DaCosta pair seems likely to be held by the weight conditions, Feanny’s Kipling Weekend could be seen as the likely winner with 2.0kg claiming apprentice Orlando Foster returning to the saddle. This was after doing a fair job behind Pete’swildone over the minimum trip in March of last year.
The lengthy lay-off must have done Kipling Weekend a world of good as his exercise reports are nothing but encouraging. This was after taking advantage of the apprentices 2.0kg claim to come in with a mere 52.5kg it should take an outstanding effort to lower his colours.
