Jaguars tighten noose

Jamaica falter to 177 all out to concede big lead

Guyana Jaguars yesterday took firm control of the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) match against Jamaica at Sabina Park in Kingston.

Heading into today’s third day, Guyana are 54-4 in their second innings with a lead of 191 runs overall.

Yesterday, Veerasammy Permaul, who struck an aggressive 86 not out to help Guyana to 314 in their first innings, returned with his left-arm orthodox spin to grab 4-22 and trigger a Jamaican batting collapse which saw them being dismissed for 177.

Scores: Guyana 314 & 54-4; Jamaica 177.

Resuming from their overnight 298-8, Guyana’s lower order was mopped up quickly by the Jamaican pacers, using the relatively new ball in overcast conditions in the morning session.

Jason Dawes, who claimed 3-28 in the innings, first bowled Ronsford Beaton for five at 313-9. At the other end, Marquino Mindley picked up his only wicket of the innings when he trapped Keon Joseph for naught.

In reply, Jamaica lost opener Nkrumah Bonner with the score on one.

Guyana pacer Keon Joseph, who generally bowled with good pace throughout the day, delivered a full-pitched delivery just outside off-stump which Bonner (one) edged to captain Leon Johnson at first slip.

Left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer had John Campbell (15), the left-handed opener, edging to slip on the stroke of the lunch interval.

Middle-order batsman Jermaine Blackwood, who played several crisp attacking strokes, flirted at a wide delivery from medium pacer Christopher Barnwell in the post-lunch session and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble for 44.

Johnson, at second slip, dropped his opposite number Tamar Lambert off Reifer before the batsman got off the mark. The unsettled Lambert did not last for much longer, wildly slashing at a short delivery, but could only edge to first slip for 14 at 102-4.

It is likely that the swing through the air and the movement off the pitch for the quicker bowlers were the reasons for Guyana waiting until the 35th over to introduce spin into the attack. And when they entered the fray, the noose was tightened on the Jamaican batsmen.

Horace Miller (44) was tricked by Permaul’s straight delivery and was adjudged leg before wicket at 138-5.

David Bernard (seven) nudged lazily at leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo’s delivery and feathered a catch to Bramble. Bounce and turn from Permaul saw a delivery hitting the shoulder of Dawes’ bat before he had scored and the ball looped to substitute slip fielder Rajindra Chandrika at 145-7.

Damion Jacobs (zero), Odean Brown (zero) and Mindley (eight) all went in quick fashion as Jamaica, yet to make a score of at least 250 runs this season, crashed to 177.

Carlton Baugh, who looked confident at the crease, was left unbeaten on 29.

The Jamaicans’ total reflected the lack of concentration by the batsmen, given the good quality of the grass-top batting pitch.

Batting a second time and boosted by the 137-run first innings lead, Guyana were pegged back somewhat by disciplined bowling from the home team.

Dawes picked up from where he left things in the first innings, getting Shimron Hetmyer to prod and edge a catch to Carlton Baugh behind the wicket.

Mindley, who has taken 2-16 so far, dismissed left-handers Vishal Singh (14) and Raymon Reifer (zero).

Bernard soon accounted for Johnson, who on 20, was dropped by Blackwood at point off Mindley when the score was 36-3.

The experienced Bernard, getting the ball to slant across Johnson (33), found the bat’s edge and Baugh did the rest by diving to his left to take a knee-high catch.

West Indies batting great Shivnarine Chanderpaul is not out on six and Jamaica’s hopes could pin on getting him before he settles in for a trademark big knock.
