Salt Marsh rally to cop Patrick Atkinson KO final
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Salt Marsh United won the only title that eluded them the last two seasons when they came from behind to beat Prospect Links 2-1 in a contentious Trelawny Football Association Patrick Atkinson Knockout final at Elleston Wakeland Centre on Saturday.
Oshane Hunter scored twice late in the game for Salt Marsh United to lift their fourth trophy after Ian McAnuff, with the help
of goalkeeper Oshane Needham had given Prospect Link the lead late in the first half.
Salt Marsh lost in the final of the KO last season after being beaten by Holland United, but won the mid-season and Major League titles and qualified for the Western Confederation Super League.
The win also confirmed Salt Marsh United’s dominance over Prospect Links, extending their winning run against them to five games over the last two seasons. The previous two knockout games between the teams had gone to penalty kicks after both ended in 1-1 scores after regulation and extra time.
Salt Marsh United won 5-3 on penalties in the 2013-14 Trelawny FA President’s Cup and 7-6 in sudden death penalties this year.
The first half on Saturday was marked by frequent stoppages for injuries and Prospect Links were forced to make one change, Oniel Graham being taken off in the 32nd minute after he just missed a second yellow card.
Earlier, Prospect Links goalkeeper Teno Evans made a good save in the 18th minute when he just got to a shot and pushed it over the bar for a corner.
A mistake by Salt Marsh United goalkeeper Needham almost gifted Prospect Links the opening goal. It occured when the custodian rushed off his line to clear a back pass from a defender but mishit the ball and it flew off his boot, but just missed going into his goal by inches. Needham ran out of luck late in the half when his mistake gave Prospect Link the lead, when he went high to collect a free-kick across the face of the goal from McAnuff, but mishandled the ball and it fell behind him and across the line.
Salt Marsh United came close to equalising in the 54th minute when Nickhoy Edwards powered the ball off the bar. They eventually drew level in the 69th minute when Hunter was well positioned to direct a header past Evans.
Prospect Links did not give up, however, and Dwayne Duncans should have given them back the lead in the 78th minute as he was picked out by a cross from the left, and with the entire goal at his mercy, he missed wide from about five yards. Prospect Links came close again a minute later, but Ronaldo Scott hit the bar from about 12 yards.
