Franfield confirms growing status
FRANFIELD confirmed his status as a horse of considerable merit with a resounding win in Overnight Allowance company on Saturday.
After being a missing factor in the three-year-old Classic races last season, the Richard Azan-trained Franfield, gave glimpses of his potential when finishing fourth in the Superstakes won by Typewriter in November of last year. He returned on Gold Cup day, finished fourth again this time behind Potcheen.
Franfield (Traditional — Supa Lei by Royal Minister) with champion jockey Dane Nelson in the saddle made mincemeat of his rivals at the lower level of Overnight Allowance destroying his eight rivals ending with a time of 1:38.0 minutes. Hover Craft, who has beaten Franfield once at this level, came on for second ahead of Military Move, who has more than one victory in the class.
“Today (Saturday), Franfield ran a good race as he is an improving four-year-old and I am now expecting him to go to the classes above and do well,” Azan told the Complete Racing Guide.
“Sometimes horses take time to mature and now that he is at a stage that he is matured, I think that you will see a lot more from him going forward,” he added.
Nelson said that Franfield is surely going places and quickly.
“This horse is really good. He did everything that I have asked him to do and he is improving with every race and I think he is going places really fast,” said the champion jockey.
As a three-year-old, Franfield won five races from 1,300 metres to 1,600 metres, indicating a preference for the middle-distance races.
