MBU hunt semi-final berth in RSPL
TUCKER, St James — Montego Bay United’s chance of returning to the semi-finals of the Red Stripe Premier League could start this Sunday when they host Boys Town at Wespow Park, as the third and final round of matches in the preliminary rounds get underway.
The defending champions have managed to remain in the top three on the points table despite having not won since late December, and are on a six games winless run.
Montego Bay United are on 36 points, nine behind leaders Arnett Gardens (45 points), Waterhouse FC are in second place on 41 points, with Harbour View in third place on 34 points.
Three teams, including red hot Humble Lion, Rivoli United and Tivoli Gardens are all on 32 points and within touching distance of the top four, should Montego Bay United and Harbour View continue to slip.
Montego Bay United have not scored a goal in over 500 minutes and lost at home for the first time since late last season, when they were edged 1-0 by Arnett Gardens. On Sunday they lost 2-0 to Tivoli Gardens.
Montego Bay United are unbeaten against Boys’ Town this season, winning 4-0 in the first round and drawing 1-1 at Collie Smith Drive, and the Carlos Garcia-coached team will hope they can continue their dominance of the Kingston team who are struggling near the bottom of the tables.
Boys’ Town have only won once in their last four games and are in ninth place on 23 points, and were beaten 3-0 by an equally desperate Cavalier SC on Sunday.
Garcia’s mettle will be tested if his charges are to return to the form that saw them top the points table in December, and the return of Dino Williams could give them an edge.
Without Williams the Montego Bay United attack has lacked venom, and rarely even posing a threat to the opposing defence.
Much to the disappointment of fans, the Montego Bay United attack led by Allan Ottey has suffered a massive dip in form, but the defence has stood up well and have conceded the least number of goals so far — 15 tied with Cavalier SC.
