Kingston capture first JTA football title
KINGSTON registered an exciting 2-1 win over St Andrew to capture the 2015 Jamaica Teacher’s Association (JTA) All-Island Parish football competition played at Emmett Park on Wednesday.
The win gave Kingston their first hold on the four-year-old football competition which
produced four different champions. St Andrew were the first winners in 2012 beating Westmoreland, followed by Manchester over Westmoreland in 2013, and St Catherine coming out victors over Westmoreland in 2014.
Westmoreland, however, are the unfortunate team as they were beaten semi-finalists for the first three years and have failed to win the coveted title.
The player who was responsible for Kingston’s first-time triumph was Dwight Thompson, who scored two goals in the first half after St Andrew had taken the lead.
Those goals followed that of a 17th-minute strike from Oneil Morrison who gave St Andrew an early lead.
Winning coach Edward Soutar was still not totally pleased despite winning the title.
“We should have scored many more goals as we got the chances to win by a much wider margin, but the players were a bit selfish and kept possession of the ball too long and eventually were disposed,” Soutar lamented.
Meanwhile, losing coach Mabracq Harris of St Andrew pinned down the loss to profligacy in front of goal.
“We good have won as numerous chances were squandered and we lost the opportunity to win and retain our title, but come next year we are going to regain it,” Harris said.
