Digicel throws $1-m cash in Grand Prix series with text-and-win
Just two weeks into the launch of the Digicel Grand Prix Athletic Championship and already excitement is at an high among athletes and supporters alike.
Now with four meets remaining before the big finale, Digicel has sweetened the pot with the introduction of a text-to-win element. This means that, in addition to the $1 million worth of gym equipment for the Grand Prix winning teams, one school will also get $1 milion in cash to further develop their overall sports programme.
“With the school spirit so high in Jamaica, we wanted to make it count for something meaningful that will truly benefit the schools and ultimately the students,” said Kamal Powell, senior sponsorship and development manager at Digicel.
“By getting the supporters involved in selecting the school, is also our way of helping the public to give back to their schools,” he added.
Each school in the six meets that are participating in the Grand Prix are assigned a unique code. The public is therefore encouraged to vote for their school to win this cash by texting the unique code to 444-2457. Voting ends at 7:00 pm on March 14 after the final of the Grand Prix. Each text vote costs $10.
The public can also vote for free via a voting app on Digicel Jamaica’s Facebook page. Each person will be allowed to vote once per day online, but can vote as often as they like through texting.
Top online and text-in voters will also win daily prizes, including call credit, data plans and smartphones.
“We see sports as a key economic driver in Jamaica, but for this to happen, it has to be sustainable. That is why Digicel continues to invest heavily in developing sports from the grass roots and high school levels to ensure that Jamaica continues to unearth world-class athletes for years to come,” said Powell.
Launched on February 4, the Digicel Grand Prix Athletic Championship will see high schools across Jamaica competing in a series of six developmental meets for a spot in Grand Prix finale at the GC Foster College on March 14. The events included are 100m, 200m 400m, 800m, 4X400m relay, discus and long jump, and the winning boys and girls teams will each take away $1 million in gym and training equipment for their schools.
The full list of schools and their unique codes can be accessed on Digicel’s website.
