Old Harbour Bay at risk to threat of tsunami – ODPEM
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has determined, based on its research, that the Old Harbour Bay community is at risk to the threat of tsunamis.
As such, the organisation will carry out a Tsunami Drill Exercise with more than 500 residents on Thursday to evaluate the community’s tsunami response capacity. The exercise is also expected to increase tsunami preparedness and improve coordination for the tsunami hazard in Jamaica, ODPEM said in an advisory Monday.
During the exercise, the organisation will also seek to test the first siren system installed for earthquake/ tsunami response in the Caribbean.
The St Catherine Parish Council, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Jamaica Red Cross, the Jamaican Infrastructure Operators (JIO) for Trans Jamaica Highway, the Ministry of Health, and the Social Development Commission will also participate.
