Paulwell outlines plans to upgrade Rockfort football field

ROCKFORT football playing field is slated to be totally transformed over the next two to three years. Member of Parliament for East Kingston and Port Royal Phillip Paulwell made the commitment to his constituents at a football game between Rockfort and Brown’s Town in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association Super League at Rockfort last Saturday.

“The Rockfort football playing area is a venue slated for significant infrastructural development,” he said. “This will be a welldeserved mini-stadium to encourage the development of the sporting talents in the once troubled and violenceprone Rockfort community. The mini-stadium will be built in the area of the present football field, over the next three years.

” Paulwell, also minister of mining, information and technology, continued: “In fact, I can announce that we are going to be transforming this field into a mini-stadium over the next two to three years. “We have received certain commitments already and are doing the drawings.

We have secured sufficient water and I think this would become a beacon for the community. “It is the solemn hope that the community that is now pledged to be peaceful will remove itself from the violence of the past and rally around the venture and ensure that this project will be able to be pursued without much difficulty,” the minister challenged.

He pointed out that the project was started some years ago with the creation of a second field “but now we are going to take it to elevated stands, proper parking area, proper fencing that people will have to pay to come in and watch the game in comfort and that the venue can be sustainable”.

While making the announcement at the halftime break of the game, Paulwell handed over cheques valued at $350,000 to each team.

And, according to him, he was using the occasion to do “my annual presentation to the teams”. He said every year “we try to assist the football programme in all aspects. Not only at this level, but also at the level of the junior teams and the football programme for the women”
