Boy Wonder obliges in Eileen Cliggott feature
In what only can be described as an outstanding performance, Boy Wonder prevailed the first time of asking over Grade One horses, beating stable companions Potcheen and Uppa Tune by one-and-a-half lengths in the Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy at Caymanas Park yesterday.
In the process, the Curragh Jamaica Agency-owned Boy Wonder has registered his sixth consecutive victory, and his second for the season and eighth overall from nine starts in a one-two-three finish for trainer Harry Parsard in the 1,300-metre event for three-year-olds and upward.
Omar Walker allowed the four-year-old chestnut colt by Traditional – Jamaican Dream by Southern Halo to bounce easily on the lead approaching the half-mile ahead of Crucial Appeal and Campesino.
He then maintained a steady gallop until turning for home when Boy Wonder drew away from the field and, although he began to shorten a bit in the final 100 metres, had done enough to hold on for a well-deserved victory over the sprint champion Potcheen. Uppa Tune, a known front-runner, came running on to snatch third from Campesino.
The winning time was a smart 1:18:2 minutes behind splits of 22:3, 45:1 and 1:10:4 minutes.
“The race ran as planned. Boy Wonder to go to the lead and Potcheen to run on,” Parsard told the Sunday Observer.
Walker said he had no doubt that Boy Wonder would win.
“Boy Wonder was sick the other day but the trainer brought him back well and he worked pretty well coming into the race. Victory today was never in doubt.”
It was the second win for Walker and Parsard who earlier teamed up with Wings Of Hope in the sixth race.
Also riding two winners were the three-time defending champion jockey Dane Nelson and former champion Shane Ellis. Nelson’s winners were Traditional Prince and Tooting Kat. Both wins were for trainer Patrick Lynch.
Ellis won aboard Seeking My Dream for Wayne DaCosta in the fifth race and Nicole in the seventh race for Harry Jaghai. DaCosta also saddled two winners as he earlier won with Make My Day in the second race.
