Guinness Street Football comes alive today
The Caribbean’s biggest and best street football tournament, the Guinness Street Football Challenge, will host the first set of play-offs today at Spanish Town Training Centre, Port Henderson Road, Dela Vega City.
The event, now in its fifth year, has been run throughout the Caribbean with much success and has now come to the streets of Jamaica for Guinness and football lovers from the community to the corporate level.
“The Guinness Street Football Challenge is the Caribbean’s premier street football tournament and in true Guinness style our consumers will play for the pride of their community and the pride of their country,” said Andrew Anguin, Guinness acting brand manager. “This tournament represents a fusion of the passion for football and entertainment at the grass-roots level and we’re excited about seeing how our consumers show they are ‘Made of More’.”
This year’s tournament will be held islandwide with the parish knockout finals running from March 1 through to May 31. All 13 parish finalists (Kingston and St Andrew competing as one parish) will compete in the national finals on June 14.
After a local champion has been crowned, the winning team will face the best of the Caribbean for a showdown on June 27 and 28 that will determine the Guinness Street Football Challenge champion.
Today promises to be an exciting display of football skills and entertainment. The match starts at 2:00 pm and, in true Guinness style, there will be an after-party following completion of the knockout matches at 8:00 pm. At the end of each match day lucky players will be selected for the Golden Boot Award, Star Juggler, and Guinness Made of More Championship award of $100,000.
Registration for parish competitors had commenced immediately after the launch which was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Guinness has also collaborated with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the respective parish associations to facilitate registration of interested applicants.
The Guinness Street Football Challenge is the only JFF-sanctioned tournament of its kind currently running in Jamaica.
