The recent Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) annual general meeting lacked the fireworks that some feared, or others maybe even hoped for.

However, there were moments of tension, contention and a bit of controversy.

Undoubtedly, the main item on the agenda of the AGM, held at the Pegasus Hotel on February 17, centred on the resolution to overturn the vote taken by the JCA board of directors on February 3.

The 10-6 directors’ decision in favour of Barbadian Joel Garner instead of Jamaican incumbent Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron for head of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) at the March 7 elections sparked a split among Jamaica’s cricket administrators.

Ultimately, members and affiliates were allowed to enter the decision-making process at the association’s AGM.

But issues related to the JCA’s constitution came to the forefront.

JCA president Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven, armed with legal advice, told those at the meeting that the vote to overturn was in breach of the rules governing the running of the association.

He said the resolution to overturn went in nine days late, which according to the guidelines of the constitution, meant it being tabled at that AGM was inadmissible unless 100 per cent of eligible members were in favour of such.

Amidst cries of objections from scores of members in attendance, Heaven suggested there could be consequences. But he relented, allowing the 67-22 vote to swing Jamaica’s support behind Cameron.

“It will have implications, (but) I have provided the meeting with the necessary legal advice,” the JCA boss said, though not detailing the possible implications.

“Because it’s a general meeting I allowed the members to make the call. I wasn’t going to push that point, [but] the fact is we had enough evidence that the resolution could not be carried,” he said.

Despite the brouhaha, Heaven was optimistic that the association will unite “for the good of cricket”.

Each territory will have two voting members at the WICB’s AGM and election for president.

JCA second vice-president Osman Dann and secretary Fritz Harris will be Jamaica’s voting representatives.
