Walton lone change in Jamaica Franchise 13-man squad
Wicketkeeper/batsman Chadwick Walton is the only change to the Jamaica Franchise squad ahead of tomorrow’s West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day clash against hosts Guyana Jaguars in Providence.
Walton, who represents the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League, but features mostly for Combined Campuses and Colleges in the defunct four-day tournament, will replace Horace Miller.
The hapless Miller was the man behind the stumps for Jamaica in their loss to Trinidad & Tobago Red Force two weeks ago at Sabina Park in Kingston.
The Jamaica Franchise, who are currently languishing in fourth place on 60 points, will have an uphill task against the leaders, who are on 107 points.
Walton’s absence from the Jamaica four-day set-up at the start of the campaign had raised eyebrows in many quarters.
Last November, head coach Junior Bennett explained that the aggressive 29-year-old batsman had opted out of the player pool for retainer contracts because of academic commitments.
With Jamaica — usually dominant in the four-day format — now struggling in the wicketkeeper/batsman slot, the Jamaican selection committee made the last-ditch move for Walton.
The two wicketkeepers used so far in the PCL have both suffered from dismal form. The experienced Carlton Baugh Jr, the sidelined West Indies wicketkeeper, started the four-day season for Jamaica and was fair behind the stumps, but failed to make meaningful contributions with the bat. Miller, the replacement for Baugh Jr, endured a poor spell with both bat and glove.
Squad: Tamar Lambert (capt), John Campbell, Shacaya Thomas, Jermaine Blackwood, Brandon King, Chadwick Walton, David Bernard, Jason Dawes, Damion Jacobs, Marquino Mindley, Odean Brown, Cassius Burton, Gavon Brown.
