Franfield to wave Bonnie Blue Flag
THE Bonnie Blue Flag Trophy for Open Allowance three-year-olds and upward is the slated main event on a shortened nine-race card at Caymanas Park today.
A trophy race to perpetuate the memory of a one-time leading all-time Stakes winner and back-to-back Horse-of-The-Year in 1964 and 1965 and Hall Of Fame inductee in Jamaica, the Bonnie Blue Flag has attracted a firm field of seven runners going 1,820 metres for a purse of $786,500.
The up-in-grade and progressive Richard Azan-trained four-year-old colt Franfield should start favourite ahead of the seasoned Open Allowance campaigner Uncle Taf, trained by Solomon Sharpe. The five-year-old chestnut gelding is also part-owned and bred in conjunction with his father Owen Sharpe.
The entire field including the fleet of foot importee, Fortuneonehundred, is capable of winning over this type of journey which, by its design, is considered an extended sprint. Apart from Fortuneonehundred, 14-time champion trainer Wayne DaCosta will also post Royal Vibes, All Correct and Italiano, who are even more capable of winning at the distance along with the Fitzroy Glispie-trained Timeforarms.
This, therefore, could see a raging gale force wind of horses heading south after rounding the final bend and setting down for the final 400-metre dash for the wire. At this stage Franfield with Dane Nelson up, Uncle Taf with Jevvanne Erwin in the saddle, All Correct with Shane Ellis astride, and Royal Vibes, Robert Halledeen up, with Timeforarms on the rails ridden by Paul Francis throwing down the gauntlet as they come forward aggressively in a valiant attempt to likely earn the major share of $429,400.
