Despite small fields for Prince Consort and Thornbird Stakes, there is a ‘buzz’
MANY of the top three-year-olds (fillies, colts and geldings) are participating in tomorrow’s final official trial races for horses intending to participate in the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas. Both races, the Thornbird and the Prince Consort Stakes are run over seven furlongs (1,400 metres).
It is quite noticeable that the top two-year-olds of last year, Come Dance With Me (fillies’ section) and Alacrann (colts and geldings) will not be running tomorrow. There is still uncertainty regarding the participation of these two in the Guineas races, with Alacrann the more likely of the two to meet the Guineas date.
Despite the absence of the big two, there is still excitement in the air especially in the Prince Consort with the presence of the Philip Feanny-trained Buzz Nightmare. A winner of his only outing to date two weeks ago, Buzz Nightmare is seen by many as an outstanding horse with good quality. Feanny in his post-race interview made it clear that while he strongly believes that Buzz Nightmare though talented, is “still green and he raced against a very moderate field of horses.”
Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta holds a strong hand with three of the runners, Poker Star, Dripping In Gold and Silver Cloud. All are in good shape, with Poker Star entering the Prince Consort with an eye-catching win over six furlongs on last.
The horse all will be watching is Siempre Bueno trained by Anthony Nunes. Siempre Bueno was put in his place by Turn Me Loose and Polly B when last at the track. He has since worked very well, and it is noteworthy that the trainer has now added the Figure 8 on Siempre Bueno. A good race in the offing.
As for the fillies, it will definitely be an open contest, with Mom’s Student, Forest Flame, and WaheedNajmah the horses to watch.
