We need to know our rights
Dear Editor,
I believe that we should discuss more about people’s constitutional rights in this country and others. They refuse to teach these lessons in schools and to inform people of what they are about just to have everything overlooked.
The Government gets away with too many things. Too much has been overlooked by the people and we suffer the consequences.
Is the Government really protecting us the people? This is what we need to look at. They pressure people every day to pay their property taxes but yet there are limited amount of jobs. They have now passed the Bill for longer working hours, but people are still earning a low wage. How can we as the people live up to the high standards of this country when we, ourselves, are classed as lower class by the same rulers of this country. This might not be said in words, but the way that many of us are living that’s what we are viewed as.
We should be protecting each others’ rights and freedoms, support each other in whatever fight there is, but instead we separate and criticise. Many of us do not even know that Jamaica has a constitution and many laws that protect our rights and freedoms. Many of us do not know the laws/constitution that protects us from police brutality or the procedure in which a police officer should operate when he is on duty. We need to look back and speak out more on our legislation and human rights in order for the people to protect themselves from all the wrongful conduct of what happens around and for those that are responsible to be punished.
There are many questions and many concerns that needs to be addressed, but one person is too small to take on the fight of the powerful so everyone sits back and watch.
