Shamaree Muir returns after injury
After being out of the saddle for just over two months, top apprentice Shamaree Muir returns to competitive race riding tomorrow.
Muir, 20, is listed on the 10-race programme to ride three horses, Supertronics, Dripping In Gold and Italiano. All three horses are being trained by Wayne DaCosta.
Muir has been on the exercise track in the mornings on a regular basis for the past two weeks and is eager to ride in actual races where he can test his fitness and his resolve.
“It feels really good to be back on a horse. I am not a hundred per cent ready as yet but I am fit enough to test my ability. At first I felt a little strain in my ankle but everything seems to be ok, so I am just hoping that it is fully healed,” he said.
On January 5, Muir fell from his mount Danos La Paz during the regular exercise period. The young rider was then rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that he had sustained a cracked bone just above his right ankle.
“The first few days were painful for me as this was the first time something like this has ever happened to me. I was praying and hoping for the day I would ride again,” Muir told the Complete Racing Guide.
To reach the point where he has been cleared by his doctors to get into the saddle again, Muir has had to put in strenuous work. Apart from working horses in the mornings, Muir has been doing his rounds in the gym to improve his general strength while riding his bicycle to restore power in his legs.
“I have been at the track working out horses for the past two weeks. I have been doing the basics, hacking and trotting horses. It has been a tough, tough road but I had to do it because I want to ride,” he said.
Before the accident, Muir, who was able to forge a formidable partnership with DaCosta, was leading the jockeys’ standing on four winners. Since the injury he has slipped to 10th position.
Muir said that he still has his sights set on challenging for the jockeys’ championship.
“I know that from where I am right now, winning the jockeys’ championship is a tall order, but I am thinking about the positives and not the negatives. I am an ambitious young man and I want to reach the top of my profession.Despite the setbacks, I have to set goals for myself and I am working towards it, as that is the only way I can overcome my injuries and test my ability so that I can find my true potential,” said Muir, who has so far ridden 95 winners since he started riding at the Park in 2012.
Muir, who says he is ready and feeling good for his assignments tomorrow, had special praises for those who assisted him in his comeback.
“There are a number of persons, my family, my friends and those from the track who have helped and encouraged me to this point, and I want to thank them for the support.”
