Victory earns Sundowns kind Cup draw
Mamelodi Sundowns had two reasons to celebrate Sunday as they reached the South African FA Cup semi-finals and then got a home draw against the weakest survivors.
League and Cup double-chasing Sundowns triumphed 2-0 at Mpumalanga Black Aces in the quarter-finals through second-half goals from Teko Modise and Themba Zwane.
Aces goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane must shoulder some blame for both goals as he was beaten by shots to his near post at Mbombela Stadium in north-eastern city Nelspruit.
Modise struck after a free-kick was tapped to him outside the box and Zwane finished off slick, one-touch passing with a close-range shot.
The semi-finals draw was made at the stadium after the match and Sundowns will host Vasco de Gama, the only second-tier club left in the competition.
Vasco came from behind twice to oust fellow lower-league outfit Black Leopards 3-2 after extra time in far-north town Thohoyandou.
Leopards were favourites having eliminated likely league winners Kaizer Chiefs in the previous round while Vasco travelled the length of the republic from Cape Town.
But after equalising in regular time and extra time, Vasco snatched victory when Mbulelo Wambi scored direct from a 108th-minute free-kick.
The other semi-final this month will also involve Cape Town and Pretoria clubs with Ajax Cape Town hosting SuperSport United.
Ajax used home advantage to edge Wits 2-1 with much of the drama coming in stoppage time as Bantu Mzwakali increased the hosts’ lead and Thulani Hlatshwayo halved the deficit.
SuperSport overcame second division league leaders Golden Arrows 1-0 in a home fixture they moved from Pretoria to northern city Polokwane.
Substitute Bradley Grobler, the son of former prolific South African goal-scorer Les, scored the winner with a close-range shot on 71 minutes at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
