Jaguars, Knights make winning starts
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Granville Jaguars and Cricket Club Knights opened their Western Basketball Association Elite League with wins on Saturday over William Knibb Thunders and Lucea Flames, respectively, at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Granville Jaguars beat Thunder 68-47, while Knights eased to a 60-45 victory over Flames to take the early lead.
Meanwhile, in one Men’s Championships game played on Saturday, Sav Elite Titans beat MoBay Community College Gladiators 52-45 at the Montego Bay Community College courts.
At Cricket Club, Jaguars prevailed despite a game-high 19 points from Thunders’ Martin Belnavis as a big third quarter made the difference.
Jaguars led 14-12 and 35-28 after the first two quarters but then held Thunders to just five points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 20 points (53-33) going into the fourth quarter.
Levar Rose led Jaguars with 14 points, three rebounds and four steals; Michael Johnson scored 12 points, while Dwayne Hart scored 11 points and had eight rebounds.
Belnavis had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Daniel Henry scored 13 points for Thunders.
In the first game, Knights recovered from a slow start to beat Flames by 15 points with Daniel Malcolm scoring 15 points and Antoniel Watson 12 points leading the way.
Julian Walker scored 15 points for Flames and Sheldon Myrie had 13 points.
In the Men’s Championship game Curtis Anderson, Chescardo Grant and Richard Russell combined for 36 points for Sav Elite Titans in their close win over Gladiators, who got 16 points from Orville Ennis.
