Granville target second place in Western Super League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Granville FC could move past Savannah SC into second place in the Jamaica Football Federation’s Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League if they can beat Village United in their second-round game at the Granville Community Centre today.
A stumble by Savannah SC against Montego Bay Boys Club on Sunday opened the door for Granville, who are last season’s beaten finalists.
Savannah SC gave up a 2-0 lead against Boys Club and had to settle for a 2-2 draw as the Westmoreland-based club inched up to 44 points. Granville’s 42 points mean that a win today would see them leap frog Savannah.
Sandals Whitehouse lead with 48 points with a game to go, and another win would see them secure the number-one seed going into the play-offs.
Granville FC had beaten Village United 3-0 in their first-round game and their confidence will be high after also coming off a 2-0 win over Wadadah FC on Saturday, which secured their place in the semi-finals.
Village United will have a lot to play for as they have not yet secured their place in the competition next season. A positive result today could go a far way in ensuring that.
Village United are tied on 28 points with Beaches Negril. Both have played 20 games and have two to go.
Salt Marsh United will also need to beat Violet Kickers today, when they meet at Green Pond High, if they are to continue their fight against the threat of relegation.
Salt Marsh are in eighth place on 25 points, just above the automatic relegation places.
Meanwhile on Sunday, Glenroy Williams scored twice for Boys Club as they clawed their way back from a two-nil hole to earn a valuable point against Savannah SC.
Michael Kerr took his goal tally to 14 after he gave Savannah SC the lead in the ninth minute while Davian Thorpe added a second in the 36th minute.
Williams pulled one back for Boys Club in the 42nd minute before getting the equaliser in the 78th minute.
