Shamaree Muir reaches 100 as Ellis wins four
Although seasoned and well respected jockey Shane Ellis rode four winners on the day, the special moment on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday belonged to apprentice Shamaree Muir who reached the landmark achievement of riding 100 wins after piloting Chief Secretariat to victory in the Joshua Morrison trophy.
Muir who was aboard two winners became the first apprentice of the batch which started their careers in September of 2012 to ride 100 winners.
“Wow…what can I say? It is just a wonderful feeling to win a 100 races, it is just fantastic. It was overdue, I could have done it earlier but I was injured and out for over two months but to come back and reach such a milestone in a short time, is just wonderful. I must thank God and everyone who has been supporting me throughout my career,” the 20-year-old Muir told the Sunday Observer. Muir’s other winner was Bongo King in the fourth race.
In a bold front-running effort, the Patrick Lynch-trained Crucial Appeal used his speed to upset fancier rivals to win the $1.05m Lady Geeta Trophy feature over 1,200 metres.
With Paul ‘Country’ Francis riding in the popular maroon and gold colours of Hamark Farms, Crucial Appeal, who was sent off as a 6-1 betting chance, was sent to the lead and that was that for his seven other rivals as he cruised home by one-and-a-lengths in a fast 1:12:0 minutes.
The 9-5 favourite Uppa Tune (Dane Nelson) finished second with Perfect Neighbour in third position.
“This horse is a very nice horse. He has speed and pace and he used it well today (yesterday). There was no catching him as he ran out a fairly easy winner and I am happy for the victory,” Lynch said.
Ellis’ winners were Come Dance With (first race), Bars Of Gold (fifth race) both for trainer Anthony Nunes, Power Of The Cat (sixth race) for trainer Carl Anderson and Terra Marique (eighth race) for trainer Victor Williams).
Racing continues next Saturday with the 76th running of the 10-furlong Jamaica Oaks, for native-bred three-year-old fillies.
