Windward Road storm through to retain INSPORTS Junior Champs
WINDWARD Road powered their way to retain their title with a whopping 520.5 points at the 37th staging of the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS)/Hi-Lyte Junior High Schools Track and Field Championships which ended at Stadium East yesterday.
Windward Road finished brilliantly, especially in the younger classes four, five, six and seven, where they dominated John Mills before pulling away for a convincing victory. They also put the icing on the cake by winning the last event of the championships, the 4×400 metres open for boys in a time of 3:41.67 minutes over John Mills with 3:45.08 minutes and Louise Bennett-Coverley third in 3:49.37 minutes.
Meanwhile, the top 10 in the overall combined points standing with the girls and boys are: John Mills second with 450.5 points, followed by Louise Bennett-Coverley on 259.5, Swallowfield with 229.5, Melrose on 205, Constant Spring on 195, Calabar with 138.5, Mico Practising on 137, New Day on 126 and Shortwood Practising with 119 points.
Windward Road won the girls’ section with 236 points ahead of John Mills on 207, Louise Bennett-Coverley with 164.5, and Swallowfield with 122 points.
The East Kingston-based Windward Road team coached by Oral Whilby won the boys’ section by accumulating 284.5 points ahead of the Ransford Spaulding-coached John Mills second with 243.5 points. Constant Spring were next with 134, followed by Melrose on 132, and Swallowfield with 107.5 points.
Matthew Hamilton of John Mills captured the Class One boys’ 100-metre final in 12.01 seconds ahead of his teammate Romario Taylor with 12.16 and third going to Javoney Fuller of Seaward with 12.19 seconds. Javante Daley of Braeton, who finished fourth in the 100m, won the Class One 200m in 24.54 ahead Fuller of Seaward with 24.80 and Hamilton of John Mills with 24.03 seconds.
Chevelle Lewis of Windward Road took the Class One girls’ sprint double. She first won the 100m in 13.62 seconds ahead of Akira Bethune of John Mills with 13.81 and Jenieve Gayle of Louise Bennett-Coverley with 13.90. She returned to capture the 200m from Gayle of Louise Bennett-Coverley and Kadian Dallas of Swallowfield.
The Class Two boys’ 100m was won by Kevin Wilson of John Mills in 12.68 seconds, with the 200m being won by Orlando Morrison of Melrose in 25.45 seconds, while the Class Three boys’ 100m was won by Shevaughn Fisher of Constant Spring, with Theomario Edwards of New Day winning the 200m in 26.09 seconds.
Jessica Fenton of Mount Moreland won the Class Two girls’ 100m in 13.46 seconds, as the 200m was won by Janealia Brown of Windward Road in 27.33 seconds. Shania McDonald of Calabar won the Class Three girls’ sprint double in 14.33, and 29.07 seconds, respectively for the 100 metres and the 200 metres.
