Guinness Street Football rolls into Portland tomorrow
The exciting street football challenge, Guinness Street Football, will host its fourth match in Portland tomorrow.
To date, three parish champions have emerged after gruelling competition with other parish teams in exhilarating matchups. The total number of participating teams now stands at 224 and the total prize pool is over $3 million.
According to Andrew Anguin, brand manager for Guinness, anticipation of the matches has been growing.
“We are extremely happy with the support we have got from the parish teams and fans of football in general. The anticipation continues to build and we are looking forward to seeing what the Portland teams come out with,” Anguin said.
The challenge kicked off in Spanish Town where Norman Buckley walked away with the golden boot title for scoring the most goals. Monster Shack walked away as champions.
Next stop was the parish of Westmoreland on the grounds of the Llandilo Sports Complex, where there was a tie for the golden boot title between Tajay Watson of Dread Team and Junior Gayle of Grange Hill Alliance, while Smokaz FC were crowned parish champions.
Santa Cruz were up next and turned out to be just as eventful as the previous two locations. Shavon Samuels took home the golden boot title scoring a record five goals to aid his team to victory. St Bess Football Club were crowned parish champions.
Each parish champion walked away with $200,000 in prize money and bragging rights in the parish.
Tomorow Guinness Street Football will be taken to the Portland community. Registration begins at 6:00 am sharp and goes up until the start of match time at 2:00 pm. The matches will be played up until 8:00 pm and the after party continues from then till midnight.
Music and entertainment will be provided by Guinness to keep patrons entertained all day along with lots of prizes and surprises and giveaways.
Jamaica will also host the Caribbean finals later this year on June 28-29, where Trinidad and Tobago are the defending champions.
St Bess FC as well as Young Blood and the other semi-finalists Holt United and Maggotty Strikers will advance to the national finals on June 14 and are now one step closer to being Caribbean champions joining eight teams from the Spanish Town and Westmoreland play-offs.
