Maverley, Seaview advance to Major League final
Maverley Hughenden and Seaview Gardens will meet in the JN/KSAFA Major League football final following contrasting semi-final wins at the Barbican field yesterday.
The final will be played at Barbican on Saturday.
In the opening game of yesterday evening’s double-header, Seaview Gardens turned back a reluctant Duhaney Park 2-0 with late strikes from Lance DaCosta, in the 79th minute, and Roland Young (88th).
The feature game between the two former National Premier League campaigners Maverley Hughenden and Olympic Gardens produced an exciting brand of play, with the former running out easy winners after over-powering their opponents 4-1.
The teams went down to 10 players each in the 76th minute. Gervan Pringle of Olympic and Odane Burger of Maverley were both red carded for violent conduct.
From the first whistle, a stirring battle ensued between the rivals, but Maverley looked the more organised and it did not take long before they went ahead in the 17th minute, through the hard-running 27-year-old Wayne Williams.
The early setback seemed to pump additional adrenaline into the veins of the Olympic Gardens players, and four minutes before the break Pringle brought the teams level. But Rodrick Williams hit back in the 33rd minute to recapture Maverley/Hughenden’s one-goal advantage by the half time.
Upon the resumption, two quick goals from Burger (52nd minute) and Phillip Peddie (53rd) put the game beyond the reach of Olympic.
