Hillstars, Porus advance to U-17 semis
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The first two semi-finalists in the Manchester FA/Moorland Development/Pat Anderson Under-17 competition have been decided, with Hillstars and Porus scoring narrow quarter-final victories on Thursday.
Hillstars, who advanced to the play-offs as the Zone Two winners, rallied for a 2-1 win over Mile Gully, while Zone Three winners Porus needed extra time to beat Georges Valley 1-0.
The other quarter-finals, which were scheduled for yesterday evening, pit Downs against Christiana Academy and Villa United against Ricam Academy.
The semi-finals are set for Tuesday, May 12.
On Thursday at the Kirkvine Sport Club, Thorn Simpson scored twice in two minutes (35th and 37th) to lead Hillstars past third-placed qualifiers Mile Gully, who led through Sakiely Salkey’s 31st-minute strike.
Meanwhile, a headed goal from second-half substitute Standford White, in the last minute of extra time, was enough for Porus to see off Georges Valley in their match-up. The teams had battled to a goalless draw after full time.
