Wadadah, Savannah meet in first leg of Western Confed Super League finals
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Wadadah FC and Savannah SC will meet today at Jarrett Park in the first leg of the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation Super League final, set to start at 3:30 pm.
In addition to the title and prize money, they are also vying for a place in the Confederation play-offs for one of two qualifying places in the Red Stripe Premier League next season, replacing Barbican and Sporting Central Academy.
The teams qualified for the two-way finals after victories in the semi-finals that ended last week. Wadadah FC got by Sandals Whitehouse 3-1 on aggregate after winning the return-leg game 2-0 at Jarrett Park, and Savannah SC got by Granville FC 2-0 on aggregate, winning their return-round game, also at Jarrett Park, 2-0.
Both teams will claim momentum is on their side after last week’s efforts, but Savannah SC will have the psychological advantage after beating Wadadah FC 4-1 in the final round of regular season games, at Frome, some time ago.
With so much at stake, however, the regular season results and even the statistics that show Savannah SC ahead of Wadadah FC in almost every category, may not matter.
Savannah SC, who won their first Confederation Super League title three seasons ago and qualified for the Premier League on their first try, were tied for the most goals in the season with Sandals Whitehouse, both getting 52.
Ron Daley, who scored against Granville FC last week, and Michael Kerr who missed that game combined for 30 goals, almost as many as Wadadah FC had as a team, 38.
Midfielder Davion Thorpe could make the difference, however, but he will face Wadadah FC’s veteran DeShawn Woolery who is the linchpin in the middle of the field for the Montego Bay team.
Oshane Forbes and Obrien Warren have been consistent in scoring important goals for Wadadah FC late in the season and will be important to their team’s ambitions today.
The return leg will be played at Frome on Saturday.
