Big guns deliver
IT was the face-off between two of the fastest straight-line machines in the island, the Ford Mustang of Adrian McLymont and the Chevrolet Camaro of Dean Shaw that punctuated a day bursting at the seams with non-stop action at Sunday’s Nestlé Supligen Drag Challenge #2 at Vernamfield, Clarendon.
“We had 134 drivers in qualifying,” Stephen Gunter, National Drag Racing Circuit (NDRC) executive member told Auto.
The highlights of the drag racing meet were plenty, but it was the eight-second final that had everyone’s interest the second the white Camaro pulled to the line next to McLymont’s Mustang. It was the match-up everyone had been waiting to see since legal drag racing returned to Vernamfield under the management of the NDRC. In just over eight seconds it was over, but the race has set the tone for the 2015 season in the eyes of fans.
“We are looking to rejoin the race for the seven second bracket,” said Shaw.
Shaw was encouraged by the slight margin between himself, putting down an 8.587-second pass to the consistent McLymont who ran 8.148-seconds to win the race. History continued to be made as Kenneth Timoll set a new fastest time for a naturally aspirated four-cylinder car with a 10.858-second quarter-mile pass in his Honda Civic.
In Street 16, Davin Virgo put his Toyota Hiace bus in the winner’s circle with a 16.209-second run over Ricardo Palmer. Super Street 15 went to Chad Gooden. Paul Miller beat Kashif Grant in the 14-second class. Christopher Walter won Pro Street 13 and Xavia Murray took the 12-second class. Pro Modified was a bevy of action as Nicholo Hamilton whittled through the 11-second class competitors including a fellow Swiftune teammate to grab head-to-head victory over Robert Barker. Teammates featured heavily in another exciting final, Pro Modified 10 as Kenrick Baker bested Adrian Randle. Michael Williams won pro Race 9 with a 9.236-second pass.
