JTA still not accepting 5% increase
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Central Executive of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) today passed a resolution to take the actions necessary to ensure that the demands of teachers regarding an improved salary offer are met.
The resolution comes two weeks after the JTA team met with the responsible officer in the Ministry of Finance, Horace Dalley.
At that meeting, held on Friday May 8, the minister promised that by today the government’s response would be made known.
However, up to 3:00 pm Friday, the teachers were still awaiting a response, which led to their action.
The Government has so far offered the teachers a five per cent increase on basic salary over two years; three per cent year one and two per cent in year two.
This was flatly rejected today by the Central Executive.
