St Catherine CC get Andre Russell boost ahead of JCA Senior Cup quarters
West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is expected to suit up for St Catherine CC when they take on hosts Westmoreland CA in the quarter-finals of the Jamaica Cricket Association two-day Senior Cup match at Paradise.
The game is scheduled to begin today at 10:00 am.
Fans can expect a cracker, with both teams going through the preliminary stage unbeaten.
Westmoreland CA topped Zone B with 24 points from five matches after winning outright on three occasions and securing first innings points in the two drawn encounters.
St Catherine CC reached the last eight of the competition after finishing as one of the three best second-placed teams. They ended with 24 points in Zone D, just a point behind Kingston CC.
St Catherine CC also had three wins to go with first innings honours in the other two games. The inclusion of Russell, who is an aggressive pace bowler and a hard-hitting batsman, could provide a substantial boost to the visitors’ chances.
At Up Park Camp, the defending champions Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) welcome pesky St Thomas CA.
Despite suffering a loss, JDF ended with 20 points inclusive of three wins to rule Zone A. Though they have West Indies left-arm pacer Sheldon Cotterell in their line-up, disciplined team displays have been their hallmark.
Both the batting and bowling departments for the soldiers have been outstanding when it matters most.
St Thomas CA, guided by sidelined West Indies wicketkeeper batsman Carlton Baugh, have certainly earned their place into the quarter-finals. They narrowly came out ahead of all rivals in a hotly contested Zone E with 15 points.
In the process, Baugh’s boyhood club Melbourne CC, were eliminated after ending in third place on 13 points.
In another game, Zone C winners St Catherine CA entertain Zone E runners-up Kensington CC in Ewarton.
St Catherine CA and Manchester CA finished with 19 points each in Zone C, but the former took number one spot due to head-to-head advantage after securing first innings points when the two squared off during the preliminary stage.
Kensington did well to hold onto second place with 14 points in Zone E.
In the fourth match of the weekend, last season’s beaten finalists Kingston CC host Manchester CA at Sabina Park.
Kingston were first in Zone D, while Manchester were second in Zone C.
