MBU hunt third place after losing to W Connection
AFTER losing 0-1 to Trinidad’s Direct TV W Connection FC in Friday night’s semi-finals of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships, Montego Bay United must win today’s game against Haiti’s Don Bosco at the Ato Boldon stadium in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago, if they are to qualify for the CONCACAF Club Championships next season.
A second-half goal from Hashim Arcia gave Direct TV W Connection FC a place in today’s all-Trinidad final against Central FC, who beat Don Bosco 3-1 on penalty kicks in the first game of the double-header.
In addition to getting the chance to decide the Caribbean club champions, both Trinidad teams have gained automatic qualification to the CONCACAF competition.
By all accounts, the Jamaican flag bearers played well, especially in the second half, but were undone by a defensive error.
Striker Dino Williams described the result as “unfortunate” in post-game interviews, but said they can’t afford to feel sorry for themselves and must bounce back for today’s game.
“We played well and it’s unfortunate to come out with a defeat,” Williams said. “But we can’t hold our heads down, we have to come again for the next game Sunday, we have to go out there and play hard and try to get the win.”
Williams said Montego Bay United had a good second half, but a “sloppy goal” made the difference and they could not get back on level terms. “We have to give thumbs up to [W Connection because] they played well.”
Montego Bay United are in a tough stretch as they played two Red Stripe Premier League semi-finals against Waterhouse last week before leaving for Trinidad on Wednesday.
Direct TV W Connection FC’s goal came in the 70th minute when Arcia was the recipient of a series of mistakes by the Montego Bay United defence.
Goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett had problems dealing with a high back pass which fell to W Connection FC’s Jomal Williams, who passed to Arcia to score his seventh goal of the competition.
Montego Bay United had some good scoring chances through Williams and Allan Ottey, while Ronaldo Rodney hit a ball just high in the 53rd minute.
Williams just missed equalising in the 79th minute with his shot on the turn, but goalkeeper Julani Archibald was equally good, getting a left hand to the ball.
