Rash-on Fashion
Here’s a fashion problem all teens face: we all have that one aunt (or some other relative) who buys the most horrible clothes, fully expecting us to wear them. Given it some thought? I’m sure you’ll all agree that it’s true. I own a not-so-pleasing-to-the-eyes pair of green polka dot pants that has been in my closet for the past six months. However, I have a plan for the ‘monstrosity’; this summer I will fold the ankles, grab a white cotton blazer, an emerald statement necklace, a pair of white strappy wedge heels, and I am good to go.
Below are some examples of how you can turn your ‘ugliest into your best’ this summer. Here’s your weekly dose of Rash-on Fashion.
Has your distant aunt from England ever sent you a pale, dismal cardigan? Maybe it has even had a few beads on it? If yes, don’t be dismayed. There are ways to spruce it up. Match that pale coloured cardigan with a pair of coloured jeans in the same colour, but with a different shade. Also, add a camisole of another shade and a pair of cute nude strappy sandals. Colour blocking is a popular trend this summer, one that anyone can pull off.
Another ‘ugliest’ that can be made ‘best’ is ancient floral dresses. These are usually given to us by our old but loving grandmothers. Floral dresses are not usually ugly but some are quite a sight. You can add class to this outfit by picking the least common colour on the dress and pair it with a similar coloured blazer that is quite trendy, as well as an eye-catching necklace. A pair of black stilettos will seal the deal and give added confidence.
Also, as young fashionistas we a face this issue: a full year after a trend has passed, our parents bring home an outfit of that same trend. They are also quite confident the outfit is “the cutest thing”, and that they are quite hip. A rule of fashion is to be unique, therefore, this should not pose a threat. Be creative, mix and match trends. Who knows? Maybe you’re the one who will rejuvenate the acid wash trend.
Loud pieces of clothing are always an issue. We sometimes are at a complete loss on how to to pair them. No matter what piece of clothing and how loud it may be, it can be paired with more subtle colours such as nude, black, grey and white. This will add elegance to your otherwise overpowering outfit and give it an air of sophistication, causing you to be the envy of your friends.
The final reference is shoes. There is little or nothing one can do to an ugly pair of shoes, however don’t disregard them. You may be wearing the next upcoming trend, and what is ugly to you might be quite cute to everyone else — that ancient aunt of yours may be fashionable after all.
Fashion is unique and diverse. An ugly outfit may just need some ‘prepping up’ so don’t throw it in the bonfire just yet. Add a cute pair of shoes or blazer to show the fashionista you truly are.
