Top runners go for glory on Labour Day at the races
A talented but ailing field of high-claiming horses will contest the $570,000 Labour Day Trophy showpiece at Caymanas Park today.
Ten races are carded with the day’s high- claiming feature slotted in at the penultimate call. The race is scheduled to go to post approximately 4:45 pm, with first post at 12:05 pm.
A field of 10 runners will go to post in the 1,200 metres call. And horses of keen interest include Italiano, Sunlight Express, New Kingston, Dagga Gagga Links, Jack De Charmer, Awesome Code and Bad Boy Justin.
Jack De Charmer has shown the best recent form among his rivals at this level. His recent good runs and a reduction in distance with jockey Shane Ellis points to Jack De Charmer having a much better chance of opening his five-year-old account after seven starts with two second-place and two third-place finishes.
Despite his inability to perform with success at this level, Carl Anderson’s trained, bred and owned Awesome Code has shown a distinct liking for this distance. Awesome Code also has two wins for the season, with his last coming over 1,200 metres in a decent time of 1:14.1 seconds. He then performed well over 1,400 metres on a $450,000 ticket and was just one length drift third. Awesome Code then came down in grade to contest his pet trip.
While carrying top weight of 57.0kg and running on a $350,000 ticket, Awesome Code finished 5 3/4 lengths second to Aquilo who carried a mere 52.0kg. Awesome Code will enter the fray carrying 53.0kg ridden by 2.0kg claiming apprentice Romario Saunders.
Sunlight Express sported quite a decent form at the back end of last year by winning his last three races for the season. Moving up to Overnight Allowance for his six-year-old campaign, Sunlight Express opened with a fighting second-place finish to Rio Cobre. Since then he has struggled to earn his keeps at the level. Sunlight Express will go to post with 53.0kg — 1.0kg overweight for Orlando Foster.
