What’s Trending?
Lately, the hashtag #MyCultureIsNotCouture has been trending on Twitter and Instagram amongst people of colour; as it addresses cultural appropriation in the fashion industry and lack of POC (people of colour) representations.
It is often argued that black contributions to beauty and style are always overlooked, and people are of the opinion that it’s about time they are given credit for it. Twitter erupted with this new hashtag after manesaddict.com posted a hair tutorial titled “HOW -TO: TWISTED MINI BUNS INSPIRED BY MARC JACOBS SS15 SHOW”. However, as most of us may know, the “twisted mini bun” known as Bantu Knots or more locally known as ‘chiney bumps’ is a traditional African hairstyle that has been around for over a thousand years.
Fed up with the continuous cultural appropriation, it would appear as though POC took to social media and expressed their disapproval and disgust with the way their culture and traditions are being exploited in high fashion.
