France to increase academic exchanges with Cuba
HAVANA, Cuba, (CMC) – French President Francois Hollande has announced plans to increase academic exchanges with Cuba and to mutually recognise degrees from Cuban universities.
Hollande, in an address at the University of Havana recently, also called for an end to the US trade embargo on Cuba.
“France will do everything it can to aid the process of opening Cuba and help get rid of measures that have so seriously damaged Cuba’s development.”
Hollande, the first French president to visit Cuba since it became an independent country, also met with former Cuban President Fidel Castro.
With a contingent of executives on this one-day visit, the French president said he is focused on strengthening business and diplomatic relations with Cuba.
Hollande also met with Cardinal Jaime Ortega and awarded him the Legion of Honour, France’s highest honour, and inaugurate a new building for the Alliance Française cultural centre.
