Dear Orchid Doc:
I had a shade Vanda blooming until the head fell off. Is there something I can do to help it grow back or is it just dead?
Gerri
Dear Gerri:
When my boys used to play football in the yard and break my orchids I used to go ballistic until I noticed that whenever they broke, two plantlets would spring on either side. Seems out of every adversity comes some good! Melt a candle and cover the wound. Excessive rainfall might retard growth, so be patient. Soon you will be getting young blooms.
Dear Orchid Doc:
I have quite a few orchids, that used to bloom constantly but recently I noticed that each time the buds come up they turn black and dry up. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? By the way, the orchids are infested with ants; could this be the cause?
Jackie K
Dear Jackie:
It sounds like an infestation of thrips and mites. By the way, the ants are actually helping you out by eating them. Pick up an insecticide to kill thrips/ mites at your nearest Farm Supplies store and follow the instructions.
