CONCACAF postpones U-15 Boys’ Championship
CONCACAF announced yesterday that its executive commitee has taken the decision to postpone the 2015 CONCACAF Under-15 Boys’ Championship, scheduled for the Cayman Islands, until further notice.
A press release from CONCACAF stated the governing body of football in North, Central America and the Caribbean regrets the decision, but “will continue to focus on its core mission of delivering outstanding soccer events”.
In the short term, CONCACAF — reeling from the recent corruption scandal — said efforts will be dedicated in full to the successful delivery of the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015, in addition to other championships which also qualify CONCACAF teams to worldwide-level tournaments, such as the men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship and the Under-20 Women’s Championship, to be played as scheduled later in 2015.
CONCACAF says it is committed to restoring a full slate of complementary youth development tournaments in the shortest possible time. This includes the objective to reschedule the Under-15 Boys’ Championship at the soonest opportunity.
This year’s Under -15 Boys’ Championship would have seen a team from Brazil, England and the Oceania Football Confederation’s Vanuatu appearing as guest teams that would have joined with the other teams from the CONCACAF region to bring the total to 37 teams for participation in the second-ever edition of the CONCACAF Under-15 competition.
This inter-continental event was scheduled to be staged in August in the native home of former CONCACAF president Jeffrey who, along with other former FIFA officials and sports marketing executives, has been indicted by US law enforcement on a wide range of corruption charges.
