PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Shewsbury were crowned champions of the INSPORTS Portland Credit Union Women’s 10-Overs Cricket Competition at Folly Oval on Sunday when they defeated Industry by 25 runs.
The victors received the championship trophy and $50,000, while Industry pocketed $25,000.
Shewsbury, batting first, made 63 for six in their allotted 10 overs as Nakeita Blackett top-scored with 21. Industry’s Jephany Davidson took two wickets for 10 runs.
Industry started out well chasing the runs in the first two overs as they were 13 without loss, but lost two quick wickets, including that of opener Marika Clarke who was run out for 15 runs in the third over.
Industry could only muster 38 for seven in their 10 overs, with Shrewsbury’s best bowling effort coming from Celina White, who took two wickets for six runs, and Stephaney Tyrell who bagged two wickets for seven runs.
Earlier on, Rio defeated Swift River by 17 runs for third place as they made 49 runs to Swift River’s 32.
Anthony Morrison, marketing manager Portland Credit Union, was pleased with the competition.
“We are happy with the competition and hoping next year it will be bigger and better. We will consider to put more in this competition. This completion was under-capitalised, and we saw it fit to build the relationship with the communities and female cricket,” he said.
Assistant Sport Co-ordinator of INSPORTS Rudolph Barnes said: “This is a big day and we are going to mandate other sport officers to do the same.”
