Elaine Thompson wins 200m title on birthday
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Elaine Thompson of MVP claimed a wonderful birthday gift by winning the women’s 200m final in 22.51 seconds at the National Senior Championships Sunday.
Thompson, who turned 23, easily dispatched two-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown (23.02) and showed that her coach’s decision for her to withdraw from the 100m was an astute one. Olympic 100m silver medallist Sherone Simpson was second in 22.77 seconds, while Simone Facey was fourth with 23.05.
Thompson’s withdrawal from the 100m was met with disbelief, but her coach Stephen Francis has defended his decision saying she was being prepared all along for the 200m despite running the 10.84 seconds, which is the third fastest in the world.
