Jamaican jockey wins Chantilly Stakes
WINNIPEG, Canada (CMC) – Jamaican Chavion Chow snatched the CAN$25,000 Chantilly Stakes with the longest shot in the field, Supreme Rush, en route to a double on Saturday’s six-race card at Assiniboia Downs.
The 28-year-old Chow brought the 19-1 chance with a flying late run to beat the three-year-old fillies by a neck, completing the six furling trip in one minute, 11.80 seconds in race five.
Seven-to-one bet I’m a Flashy Girl set the pace to reach the half-mile in 46.60 seconds, half-length clear of favourite Holiday Maker with Supreme Rush lying fourth in the six-horse field.
In the stretch drive, Holiday Maker and Major Sugarattack threatened as I’m a Flashy Girl faded, but Chow just got the fast-finishing brown filly up late to snatch victory.
Chow had earlier produced a similar ride in race one to carry 6-1 bet Barney R to a half-length victory over the three-year-olds and upward.
Going 7-1/2 furlongs, Chow stalked with the six-year-old bay gelding as Fire Like Anoutlaw and Tin Pan Indy disputed the lead though the quarter run in 26 seconds and the half mile in 51.
Chow then got the best out of Barney R in the stretch, beating Pacific Tsunami in a duel.
Guyana-born Rohan Singh also stole a share of the headlines, riding two handsome winners on the day’s card.
He opened his account in race three when he paired with 5-1 chance Papa Smitty to beat the three-year-olds and followed up in the day’s final race, making all the running with 2-1 bet Mr Magic Please to score by 2-3/4 lengths.
