Justin Plaschka lands 2 gold medals on final day of CCCAN
Justin Plaschka won two gold medals while setting a new Jamaica senior national record on the final night of the XXIX Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships (CCCAN) on Saturday in Barbados.
Plaschka’s first gold medal swim came in the boys’ 18 & over 100-metre freestyle with a time of 52.09 seconds. In a nail-biting finish Plaschka out-touched St Lucia’s Adrian Augier by the slimmest of margins, one-hundredth of a second, with Isaac Beitia of Panama third in 52.74 seconds.
In less than an hour Plaschka won his second gold medal of the evening in the 50-metre butterfly with a winning time of 24.89 seconds, defeating the defending champion and CCCAN record holder Joshua McLeod of Trinidad and Tobago into second place in 25.05. Plaschka’s swim is a new Jamaica senior national record erasing the previous record, of 25.32 seconds held by Masai Zebe-Chaka.
Justin Plaschka’s magnificent performance on Day Five CCCAN capped off a good meet, where he won three gold medals and one silver medal and set two Jamaica senior national records.
Jamaica’s other finalist on Day Five was Jesse Marsh, who set a personal best 27.68 seconds in the 13-14 boys’ 50-metre butterfly, finishing sixth in the final.
Earlier in the morning prelims in the boys’ 13-14 age group Jesse Marsh produced a personal best 56.97 seconds for ninth place in the 100-metre freestyle, missing the final by two-hundredths of a second, while Alex Mignott set two personal best times — in the 100-metre freestyle 57.03 seconds for 11th place and 29.63 in the 50-metre butterfly for 12th place.
The Jamaican swimmers are scheduled to return today at 11:30 am on Caribbean Airlines BW 414.
