MBU resume training for CONCACAF League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — ORVILLE Powell, president of Montego Bay United (MBU) has described the schedule in the upcoming Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League as a “mixed bag”.
The lone Jamaican team in the competition will play its first two games away before ending with back-to-back home games at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Saying that the team, which returned to training this week after a hectic 2014-15 season, would have little rest between season, Powell added that playing their last two games at home would give the club a “leg-up” as they would be able to use home advantage to make up for any mishaps in their first two games.
Montego Bay United will open against Arabe Unido on Jamaica’s Independence Day, August 6, at Estadio Maracana in Panama, then travel to Washington, DC on August 25 to face MLS Club DC United at RFK Stadium in Group H. The teams will play on a home and away basis in the first round with the eight group leaders advancing to the second round.
MBU will then host DC United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Tuesday, September 22, then finish their schedule against Arabe Unido, a month later.
MBU qualified for the 24 team continental event after placing third in the Caribbean Football Union’s Club Championships this past season
Powell told Jamaica Observer West that the club is looking at strengthening the team for the competition, adding that with the FIFA transfer window set to open this week, “we would know more as time went on”.
Dr Dean Weatherly, he disclosed, would stay in charge “for the time being” as the club continues to seek a replacement for Carlos Garcia who was fired just before the end of the regular season.
