Claremont FC get $500,000 sponsorship for St Ann Major League
CLAREMONT, St Ann — Newly promoted team to the St Ann Major League, Claremont Football Club, has been boosted with a $500,000 sponsorship by businessman Denzel McDonald.
The money will be used to help prepare the club for its first ever season in the Major League.
Claremont lost 2-0 to Brazil in the Division One final recently, with both teams being promoted to the Major League by virtue of reaching the Division One final.
It is the first time in the club’s history that Claremont FC have reached the Major League and McDonald, who hails from Claremont, says he was impressed with what he saw from the team in the final, despite the loss.
“Claremont is my hometown and everybody knows that I’m always involved in community activities,” said McDonald.
“I watched them play the other day and despite the fact that they weren’t training together they played well, there was chemistry out there and I realised that if we keep them together and get a management team in place, a proper coach and so on, then I think they will do well.”
McDonald said it was not a hard decision to support the team as he realised they got good support from the community.
He noted that he was in it for the long haul and would try and support the team as best as he could. “I realise that what is lacking is the financial support so I decided I was going on board and just help them. I’m here for the long haul, I’m going to try and do my best as it relates to that. And I expect that when they go into the Major League they will continue to do well.”
At the handing over of the cheque to the club, several other people also pledged financial support as Claremont FC look to get ready for the new Major League season set to start later this year.
Under the management of Kawayne Lewis, Coach Andrew Holland and Captain Roniel Francis, Claremont FC gave the farming community something to smile about when they qualified for the parish’s top league.
McDonald and Christopher Lee are expected to assist with the management of the club as it seeks to build on its current success.
