Gayle backs Tallawahs to rebound
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica Tallawahs captain Chris Gayle expects his teammates to rebound after a heavy loss to St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on Saturday.
Gayle’s team was beaten by 119 runs in the Hero Caribbean Premier League at Warner Park in Basseterre for their second loss of this campaign.
But the big left-handed batsman argued that Tuesday’s game against St Lucia Zouks on home soil at Sabina Park offers a good chance to return to winning ways.
“I back my players to get the job done and we (have) a lot of match-winners in our team… guys who have actually played all around the world and I don’t see any reason why they can’t come in and do it for the Tallawahs. Once our all-round game can click we can actually win more games,” Gayle said at a welcome reception for the Tallawahs at the Norman Manley Airport on Sunday.
Gayle said he expects a return to form for batsman Mahela Jayawardene, who is yet to spark in his debut season for the Tallawahs.
“He’s a world-class player, he’s been in these positions before so I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t bounce back. I back his ability to get some runs and playing in Jamaica should help him a bit. Sometimes as an overseas player you play in a particular team and you don’t get the runs and you may feel a bit down. But he’s human and I’m sure he’ll produce with the bat for us. And we back each other in whatever situation,” he said.
All-rounder Andre Russell, who has not yet shown his electric capabilities with bat and ball, told OBSERVER ONLINE that he is “ready to do well” in front of home fans.
