Two elderly fishermen drown in Falmouth
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — The Trelawny police were up to late yesterday evening probing the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning of two seasoned fishermen whose bodies were fished from the water just off the shore of Falmouth earlier in the day.
The deceased, both of Falmouth and believed to be in their 70s, have been identified as Frederick Black, who was commonly called ‘Perpie’ and Kenneth Baker, who went by the moniker ‘Warrie’.
Reports are that the bodies of both men, who left the Falmouth Fishing Beach for sea in a small paddle boat Monday night, were spotted floating at sea by a surfer, who went ashore and made an alarm.
A group of fishermen, who set out from the fishing beach in Falmouth, fished the bodies from the water and took them ashore.
Distrauught fishers who gathered on the beach, surmised that their two colleagues drowned after their boat capsized some time after they left for sea Monday night when the weather deteriorated.
The two men were described as amicable and easy to get on with.
“The two a dem a cool, cool man dem,” one fisherman was overheard saying.
“A must rough sea reach dem and the canoe overturn,” another added.
At least six people, including two mentally challenged, have drowned in the parish since the start of the year.
The first reported drowning was reported at the Burwood Beach, where 73-year-old Wavel Reid of Bunkers Hill drowned in January.
